Goals: To explore opportunities for expansion of CenCITT participation in industry-relevant pollution prevention R&D capabilities at the University of Minnesota (UM).
Rationale: With the completion of a series of projects dealing with engineering characterization of hollow fiber membranes and biofiltration, involvement by UM was expected to require transition prior to the FY1995 CenCITT funding cycle. Accordingly, a survey project to characterize other resources at UM was necessary to broaden participation of UM faculty, staff and students.
Approach: Over 100 faculty were contacted either by telephone or mail with an introduction to CenCITT and a solicitation for their interest in pollution prevention research. Results were compiled based on scientific areas of opportunity and industry sectors. A report including these scientific and industry assessments was written. Findings were used to broaden participation in CenCITT's 1995 internal proposal solicitation.
Status: Project is complete. The project report identified four areas of particular strength at UM: roads and buildings, solvents, chemical synthesis and agricultural chemicals. 36 faculty were identified as potential CenCITT participants, of which six received new funding during the 1995 internal proposal solicitation. The net result was an expanded participation base and funding for UM CenCITT projects.
