Environmental Technologies Design Option Tool (ETDOT) is a compilation of self-contained simulation software for use in assessing and implementing effective treatment strategies for gaseous, aqueous, organic, and solid waste by-product streams. ETDOT provides simulation software necessary in determining whether prevention or treatment is preferred during the design phase.

ETDOT may be used to evaluate source reduction versus end-of-pipe treatment, integrate treatment into the manufacturing process, evaluate waste segregation versus central treatment, and select and size the most effective environmental technologies. ETDOT is designed for the Microsoft Windowstm.gif (70 bytes) environment with a graphical user interface (GUI) to maximize user-friendliness.

Advanced Oxidation Process Simulation Software (AdOx) Features:
  • Comprehensive, mechanistic advanced oxidation model for organic contaminants removal
  • Considers most important elementary reactions involved in the H2O2/UV process, the influence of hydroxyl radical scavenging and the attenuation of UV light due to background compounds in the water matrix
  • Modeling of multiple target compounds destruction
  • Variable operation mode options:  provides steady state solution for flow reactors and fully dynamic solution for both batch and flowing systems
  • Predicts the change in pH
  • Photolysis and radical reaction rate constants and photochemical parameters database and estimation methods
  • Also contains dye study model that can analyze pulse dye study data and determine the appropriate number of tanks in series required to describe the mixing conditions in the reactor.  This in turn can be used to select the appropriate number of tanks for designing the photochemical reactor.

Biofilter Design Software (Biofilter) Features:
  • A mathematical model that simulates the processes occurring in a biofilter (or biotrickling filter) that is used to treat odorous air emissions or VOCs
  • Considers advective flow in gas- and liquid-phases
  • Incorporates mass transfer at the gas-liquid and liquid-biofilm interfaces, as well as internal diffusion in the biofilm
  • Considers active biomass growth and decay and biological reaction in the biofilm

Minimum System Requirements:
ETDOT is designed for the Microsoft Windowstm.gif (70 bytes) environment with a graphical user interface (GUI) to maximize user-friendliness. Making use of the Microsoft Windows interface, with its built-in file and hardware control features, frees the engineer from concerns over printer drivers and other "machine" issues and allows more attention to the computational algorithms. The GUI for each program consists of a Microsoft Visual Basictm.gif (70 bytes) front-end shell that calls FORTRAN subroutines to perform the calculations.

The minimum ETDOT system requirements are as follows:

  • An English-language version of Microsoft Windows 95, or Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0; in the case of Microsoft Windows NT 4.0, Service Pack 3 or more recent is required
  • A Pentium or more recent processor
  • At least 50 MB of hard drive space
  • At least 32 MB of RAM is recommended
  • A graphic VGA or more recent video display
  • A mouse or other pointing device is recommended
